The Chattanooga area chapters of the Urban League and National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) announced they are joining forces with the Fight the Hike campaign. Fight the Hike, a coalition of citizens and businesses including the Chattanooga Manufacturers Association, Chattanooga Mayor Ron Littlefield and Hamilton County Mayor Claude Ramsey, announced last month a movement to oppose the 20.58 percent water rate hike proposed by Tennessee-American Water Company (TAWC).
“The number of Chattanoogans who are less than a paycheck away from being unable to pay for shelter and keep their families fed is staggering. In this economy, every penny counts,” said Warren Logan, president of the Urban League of Greater Chattanooga. “Our hardworking citizens deserve protection from Tennessee-American and its parent companies. These water companies are draining us dry in order to line the golden pockets of their shareholders.”
“If we want to stop the unjust price increases that continue to cause economic setbacks for families in our community, we must take a stand and make our voices heard,” said Valoria Armstrong, president of the Chattanooga-Hamilton County branch of the NAACP. “We want the Tennessee Regulatory Authority to know that we will not sit idly by while Tennessee-American asks for excessive rate increases year after year.”
There will be two public comment sessions regarding TAWC’s proposed rate increase: Aug. 18, 6:30-8:30 p.m. and Aug. 19, 8:30-9:30 a.m. The TRA will hold both sessions at the Hamilton County Courthouse.
