Former BDC Director Angela Glover Gets 18 Months For Embezzlement posted August 18, 2008 The former director of the Business Development Center in North Chattanooga was sentenced Monday to serve 18 months in federal prison for the embezzlement of over $80,000. Ms. Glover asked for time to report, saying she has to make arrangements for two granddaughters she keeps. Judge Sandy Mattice allowed her until Oct. 10 to report, but said he has "zero sympathy" for her. He noted that she had embezzled before. Prosecutor Gary Humble said Ms. Glover was convicted in 1990 of stealing student checks when she worked at UTC. He said she served time in that case. The sentencing range was 15-21 months. Her attorney, Gerald White, argued that she should get out as soon as possible so she can start earning money to pay restitution. Judge Mattice said she likely will have a difficult job finding a good-paying job due to her record. She owes $61,025 to the Chamber of Commerce and $22,462 to First Tennessee Bank. Ms. Glover, 52, had been fired just before Christmas 2006 by the Chamber of Commerce due to "a series of accounting discrepancies." Prosecutors said Ms. Glover created false invoices for BDC tenants, then deposited them into an account at First Tennessee Bank. She would obtain cash for part of the checks, though it was supposed to be a "deposit-only" account. The scheme went on from August 2001 to March 2006. |
