Flames Add Five To Pitching Staff posted August 19, 2008
Said coach Brew, "We return the most experienced mound staff we’ve had in my 13 years at Lee (the only losses were 10 game winner Dallas Sims and relief pitcher Ryan Stovall). It helps, knowing that going into the summer that we returned 52 of our 63 wins from 2008. “But we are always looking to improve our pitching staff and have to protect our team against unknown, such as potential injuries,” he pointed out. “The addition of these five guys we are announcing, along with previously signed pitchers Adam Ray from Walters State and David Eskew from Walker Valley High School provides us with one of the deepest pitching staff's we have ever posted at Lee. A mix of 11 right-handed pitchers and seven left-handed pitchers will provide us with several options next spring." Matthew Gilson – Junior - left-handed pitcher – Transfer from Broward Community College (Fla.) – 6-foot--4 - 205 pounds - Hometown - Pembroke Pines, Fla. - Played for Coach Bob Deutschmann at Broward - Named Florida Southern Conference Pitcher of the Year in 2008, First-Team All State in Florida in 2008, Honorable Mention NJCAA All-American in 2008. Statistics - 2008 - 8-3 record, 1.48 ERA (9th in NJCAA), 13 walks, 66 strikeouts, 91 innings pitched. 2007 Statistics - 5-2 record, 2.63 ERA, 9 walks, strikeouts, and 78.2 innings pitched. Coach Brew said, "Matt brings us a front line type of arm, capable or replacing departed senior Dallas Sims. He has a chance to be very good on our level and should compliment a great returning pitching staff. He fits directly into our pitching philosophy being a strike thrower and fierce competitor and will compete for a weekend rotation spot." Bradley Williams – Junior - right-handed pitcher - Jackson State Community College (Tenn.) – 6-foot, 190 - Hometown - Covington, Tenn. - played for Coach Steve Cornelison at Jackson State. 2008 Statistics - 7-3 record, 25 walks, 55 strikeouts, and 76.2 innings pitched. Coach Brew said, "Bradley has the ability to fill a dual role for us, meaning he can start and will give us a great option out of the bullpen. His low ¾-arm angle complimented by a solid slider and change will make him extremely tough on some teams. He should be in the mix for a lot of innings, if he throws like he’s capable of." Todd Conerly - Junior right-handed pitcher - Angelina Community College (Texas) – 6-foot-2, 190 pounds - Hometown - Lufkin, Texas - played for Coach Jeff Livin at Angelina CC - drafted in 30th round of 2005 draft by San Diego Padres. Coach Brew said, "Todd could be a very big surprise for us in 2009. He has a great arm and if totally healthy, could be a solid force in a deep pitching staff. His velocity, along with a quality breaking pitch, makes him a candidate for several innings in 2009." Justin Frazier - Junior right-handed pitcher - Cleveland State Community College – 5-foot-10, 205 pounds - Hometown - Riceville, Tenn. - played for Coach Mike Policastro at Cleveland State 2007 Statistics – 1-1 record with four saves in 2007. Coach Brew said, "Justin is another person who might surprise the coaching staff with his ability in 2009. He possesses a great at arm at 87-88 miles per hour and, if consistent with his slider, could be another solid option for the Flames." James Rechenbach - Freshman left-handed pitcher - played at Fulton High School (Knoxville, Tenn.) graduated from Berean Christian High School (Knoxville, Tenn.) – 6-foot-1, 170 pounds - Hometown - Knoxville, Tenn. - Played for Coach Raymond Skeen at Fulton High School - Class 3AA All-District Selection. Statistics - 43 innings pitched, 2.44 ERA, 33 strikeouts, and 15 walks. Coach Brew said, "James caught our eye late in the summer of 2008, playing for the Knoxville Yard summer program. He provides us with a solid freshman left-hander and once he gains maturity, strength, and experience, he should begin to contribute on the mound for the Flames." |
