Fight The Hype, Not The Hike
posted August 19, 2008

After following the current "Fight The Hike" crusade; I think perhaps we would all fare better if we "Fight The Hype." Where is the fight against TVA and EPB in regard to the coming power increase? Oh, I suppose that increase is okay. Okay because the city already owns the Electric Power Board.

The additional revenues I suppose will soften the blow from the Volkswagen Sweepstakes Giveaway - although we all welcome the jobs that are forthcoming. Why aren't we fighting the hike from Chattanooga Gas or Comcast or for that matter Exxon and the Big Oil? Why not fight the hike from Bi-lo, Hamilton Place Mall and every other hand that is reaching in our pockets?

The facts are, as is often the case, obscured behind all the hype. We all know that prices are rising on every front - from the gas for our cars to the food on our dinner tables. A close inspection of your water bill will reveal that close to half, if not more than half, of your bill is for sewer charges which goes directly to the city. This charge has increased at a higher rate than your water charges. Why not fight the sewer charge hike?

Perhaps it would make much more sense to attend the rate increase hearings and hear the facts. Maybe then the true fight can be fought against the hype.
