Grief Camp Offered To Children Who Have Suffered Loss Of A Loved One
posted August 19, 2008

One in five youngsters will experience the death of someone close to them by age 18, according to a recent study on death and dying. In 2007, the social security administration reported that nearly two million children receive death benefits from a deceased worker.

Hospice of Chattanooga is offering a free one-day grief camp on Saturday, Sept. 27, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m to help children address their grief issues and to learn ways to move through the process towards healing.

Hospice officials say children’s experiences of grief vary depending on the type of loss and the developmental stage of the child. Activities at the camp will include drama, art and movement.

Parents will have an opportunity to participate in a parents’ camp to run concurrently with the children’s camp. The adult camp will provide parents/guardians with tools to help them cope with family loss; understand normal grief versus complicated grief and resources to work with their children on grief.

The camp is open to youngsters aged five to 11 years old. This year’s camp will be held on the main campus of Chattanooga State. Space is limited.

To register, call 892-4289, ext. 422.
