Commission Rejects James For Sheriff's Civil Service Board
posted August 20, 2008

The County Commission voted 6-3 on Wednesday to reject the nomination of attorney Stuart James for a term on the Sheriff's Civil Service Board.

Mr. James was the choice of Commission members from Districts 4, 5 and 6 whose term it was to make the selection.

Voting in favor were those commissioners - Greg Beck, John Brooks and Warren Mackey.

However, opposed were Commissioners Curtis Adams, Fred Skillern, Bill Hullander, Larry Henry, Richard Casavant and Jim Coppinger.

Commissioner Skillern said, "We have a new sheriff and this is not the time for someone on the board who may be controversial."

Mr. James is a former chairman of the Hamilton County Democratic Party, and he had been a staunch opponent of Republican Jim Hammond in the sheriff's race.

Mr. Hammond won and was sworn into the office by Ret. Judge Sam Payne at the commission meeting.

The position is for that now held by Dorothy Lawson.
