County Schools Facing 12.37% Health Insurance Rise

Cigna is proposing a 12.37 percent rise in the health insurance for the county schools.

Tommy Kranz, school finance director, said the rate is better than the current increase trend of 19 percent.

He said the increase is due to higher medical claims incurred during the year, as well as some higher individual claims. One claim was for $433,199 and another for $194,523. There were 50 claims over $25,000.

Mr. Kranz, in a letter to school board members, said, "Cigna has advised us that our current plan is rich and that our employees pay a relatively small share of the cost. They have also advised us that without small plan changes to partially offset cost increases and plan utilization over time, it is difficult to maintain regular trend increases in the future."

Cigna has provided some programs aimed at assisting employees in lowering medical claims.

The monthly premium is $1,389,722.

There are 1,691 subscribers.
