Five-Run First Inning Leads To Mets Win Over Braves Wednesday, 6-3
posted August 20, 2008

NEW YORK -- Multiple errors damaged Jair Jurrjens and helped the Mets build a five-run first inning that propelled them to a 6-3 win over the Braves at Shea Stadium on Wednesday night.

Jurrjens, who is 1-4 with a 4.35 ERA in his past five starts, was charged with four earned runs and six hits in five innings. If not for consecutive errant throws made by Chipper Jones and Yunel Escobar, the right-hander would have allowed just two runs in the first inning.

After needing just 13 pitches to retire two of the first three batters he faced, Jurrjens needed another 31 pitches to end the first inning. He issued consecutive walks to Carlos Delgado and Carlos Beltran before Daniel Murphy delivered a two-run single. Fernando Tatis followed with a chopper that Jones fielded, before throwing into the dirt in front of first base.

Because the official scorer generously provided Tatis an infield single, just one of the two runs that scored on the play was ruled unearned. Escobar made matters worse by fielding a Brian Schneider grounder and then making a high throw to Greg Norton, who was playing first base in place of Casey Kotchman, who was placed on the bereavement list on Wednesday.

Mike Pelfrey capped the first inning with an RBI single that gave him even more comfort as he took the mound. The 24-year-old right-hander, who has seen the Mets go 13-3 in his past 16 starts, allowed just three hits and three earned runs in his first career complete game. Gregor Blanco damaged him with a third-inning RBI and then started a two-run sixth inning with his 15th bunt single of the season.
