WWII Veteran Was Well-Respected Chemical Engineer

Henry Wilson Withers Jr., of Signal Mountain, Tennessee, died on Thursday, August 21, 2008, after a long illness.

Henry was born March 12, 1920 to the late Henry Withers Sr. and Natalie Terry Withers in Abingdon, Va.

Henry was well-respected among his peers in the chemical engineering profession. He attended William King High School in Abingdon, Va., and graduated from Virginia Tech in 1941, Phi Beta Kappa with a degree in chemical engineering.

Henry served in the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II at Fort Belvoir, Va., earning the rank of major. Following the war, Henry worked as a chemical engineer at Tennessee Eastman, Veliscol Chemical, DuPont and retired from the Tennessee Valley Authority.

Henry was a member of Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church for 48 years. Henry enjoyed nature, fishing, golf and gardening. He was a member of the Signal Mountain Golf Club and an avid golfer.

In addition to his parents, Henry was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert, and Dr. S. Terry Withers; and sister-in-law Ruth of Kinston, N.C.

Survivors include his devoted wife, Joan McQueen Withers, with whom he shared 48 years of marriage; two children, Elizabeth Kelly of Atlanta, and David G. Withers of Harrisburg, Pa.; son-in-law, Don Rickert of Atlanta; grandchildren, Jonathon and Andrew Rickert, Sara Fiala and her husband, Rob, of Falls Church, Va., and Daniel Withers of Philadelphia; brother and sister-in-law, William and Ruth of Lynchburg, Va.

The memorial service for Henry will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, in Marr Chapel at Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church with Dr. William E. Dudley and David G. Withers officiating.

The family will receive friends at the church after the service. Interment will be held in Abingdon, Va.

Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers, may make donations to Signal Mountain Presbyterian Church, the Alzheimer's Society, or to the charity of their choice.
