Mayor Ron Littlefield, Councilman Leamon Pierce and Chief Wendell Rowe are joined by Chattanooga firefighters with Station 4, along with representatives of RBA Construction, and ARTECH Architecture and Interiors.
Chattanooga city officials gathered at Hardy Elementary School on Friday afternoon to break ground for a new fire station.

The old Station 4, constructed in 1955, was demolished in March.

Today, ground was broken for a new, larger Station 4 that will also be located on the grounds of Hardy Elementary School.

During the brief ceremony, Fire Chief Wendell Rowe thanked Hamilton County Schools for donating additional property to accommodate the larger, two-bay station.

Construction on the station is scheduled to begin on Monday and is expected to be completed in approximately 229 calendar days.

The project is expected to cost approximately $1 million.

Staffing will continue with 15 firefighters, with five working each of the three shifts.

It will house one fully equipped, front-line fire apparatus. The second bay can house additional equipment if necessary.

Features of the new station:

- One-story, double bay fire station.

- LEED-certified building. The Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design (LEED) was developed by the U.S. Building
Council to establish standards for environmentally sustainable
construction.

- Low maintenance floors.

- Water conservation feature. An external tank will capture rainwater,
which will be used for washing the apparatus and other uses.

- Residential sprinkler system in sleeping areas.

- A Community Room that can be used by neighborhood residents for
meetings and other activities.
