Jones Memorial UMC Hosts 33rd Annual Men's Club Barbecue posted August 22, 2008 Jones Memorial United Methodist Church will host their 33rd Annual Men's Club Barbecue on Saturday, Sept. 20. The barbecue will be in the Church Fellowship Hall, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. The church is located at 4131 Ringgold Road in East Ridge. Menu options will include one's choice of Chicken, Beef or Pork Plates - $6.50, Extra Large Pork or Beef Sandwiches - $4.00, Bulk Bar-B-Que meat by the pound package - $8.00 per pound, Pie and Cake Sale by the United Methodist Women For More Information, call the church office at 624-6073; Eat In or Carry Out Chairmen, Tom Baugh, 667-1120, and Jeff Baugh, 413-7516. The funds raised by the Bar-B-Que go to purchase coats for needy children in East Ridge schools. They also go to help youth camps, youth assemblies and other charitable projects for both the church and the community of East Ridge. Over the past 18 years 1,400 coats have been purchased for these children in need totaling $38,606.00. The principals of the East Ridge schools help by letting the church know how many coats are needed and the sizes. The church delivers them back to the schools and the principals distribute them. Official said they have received many touching notes from needy children over the years thanking us for their coat, as will as having one of the teachers from McBrien came to speak at the morning worship last year, as every child in her room got a coat. She wanted the church to know how much the children appreciated their coats. The church also puts a small new testament in the pocket of each coat. Tom Baugh has been chairman of the Bar-B-Que for 31 years with his son, Jeff Baugh joining him as Co-Chairman 12 years ago. Tom Martin started the Bar-B-Que 32 years ago by getting men in the church together. The Bar-B-Que has been dedicated in his memory since his death. In the beginning the men cooked about 500 pounds of meat and this year they will cook close to 5,000 pounds of meat. They use Tom Martin's Bar-B-Que sauce recipe. The fires are started on Thursday night at the Bar-B-Que pits next to the East Ridge playground on Tombras Avenue. Also on Thursday night the women of the church meet to make homemade cole slaw, baked beans, tea and Bar-B-Que sauce in the church kitchen. Cooking goes on all day and night Friday and into Saturday. In the Summer of 2003 the men took on refurbishing the Bar-B-Que pits for the city due to years of deterioration. The youth go out and sell tickets and deliver to local businesses in East Ridge on Saturday morning. Serving starts at 10 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Everyone in the church gets involved. The JMUMC Men's Club meets once a month on the second Saturday of the month. They cook breakfast together around 6:30 a.m. and serve at 8:00 a.m. with a special speaker and meeting. The barbecue schedule is as follows: Wednesday, Sept. 10 - Split wood at the church after dinner and move to pits on Tombras Avenue.
