County School Board member Debra Matthews died at a local hospital early Sunday morning.

Her son, Ladell Matthews, said she went into the hospital on Friday after developing heart blockages.

He said, "She had been doing better, but I think the stress and strain of the election was hard on her heart."

Ms. Matthews, who was 58, had won over challenger Gregg Juster in the election earlier this month.

Now it apparently will be up to the County Commission to name her replacement.

Here is the applicable law:

"When a vacancy occurs, the unexpired term shall be filled at the next regular meeting of the county legislative body or at a special meeting of the county legislative body.

(2) Vacancies shall be declared to exist, on account of death, resignation or removal from the county."

Funeral arrangements will be by Hardwick and Sons Funeral Home on MLK Boulevard.

She is also survived by brothers, Sherman Matthews and Kevin Matthews.

Ms. Matthews represented District 4 on the County School Board.

The Howard High School graduate and Alton Park resident had undergone double bypass surgery in August 2005, and had been in a wheelchair in recent months.

County school officials said, "The Hamilton County Department of Education lost a valued supporter and student advocate Sunday when longtime school board member Debra Matthews passed away."

“I was very sad to hear of Ms. Matthews passing. She was a tremendous asset to the board and she will be missed greatly,” said Supt. Dr. Jim Scales. “Ms. Matthews was a strong advocate for doing what was right for all students. She will be remembered as a champion for children.”

Ms. Matthews served on the school board for 10 years and held a master’s degree in education from Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville.

The school board vacancy created by Ms. Matthews’ passing will be filled in accordance with board policy, it was stated.
