Dr. John W. Schaerer, director of technology development and transfer, has decided to retire, effective Aug. 29, 2008.
In his letter to the President and CEO J. Wayne Cropp, Dr. Schaerer said that his work in developing technology transfer from the “idea” stage to full maturity has been extremely rewarding, and he will always be proud of his association with TEC.
“We defied the odds with the development of the Rapid Deployment Shelter System in a partnership with Adaptive Methods and B&W Y-12,” said Dr. Schaerer. “This was the first successful technology transfer made for TEC, and in less time than many had expected. It has paved the way for many other successful transfers to come.”
Through his work in technology transfer, Dr. Schaerer has helped to carry forth the mission to develop high paying technology-based jobs in the community, it was stated.
“While working closely with The Enterprise Center team, John helped to establish relationships with technology centers and entities in the region and this work has already brought 100 high level jobs to Chattanooga,” said Jim Hall, chairman of the board of The Enterprise Center. “Dr. Schaerer was an important asset to TEC and we wish him well as he enters into retirement.”
The Chattanooga native joined The Enterprise Center in April 2007.
Dr. Schaerer was the founding director of the UTC Riverbend Technology Institute.
He also served as special assistant to the chancellor at UTC.
Dr. Schaerer holds a doctor of education degree from The University of Tennessee at Knoxville and both a master of education degree and a bachelor of arts degree in biology from UTC.
