Erlanger Extends Contract For Consultant On Physician Practice Model
posted August 25, 2008

The finance committee of the Erlanger Medical Center board of trustees has approved extending the contract of a consulting firm studying a new physician practice model for the hospital.

The contract extension with GPMS is for $100,000 for four months.

Officials said Erlanger two years ago had only about 40 physicians on staff - mainly pediatricians.

But now it has about 80 physicians on staff and soon will have 100.

Hospital official Roger Forgery said there are now eight or nine physician practice models in place, and the hospital hopes to get a single model in place.

The model would include Erlanger as well as the University of Tennessee College of Medicine.

Chuck Gooder of GPMS will stay on through the end of the year and develop plans for a replacement administrative leader for the physician practice group.

Erlanger officials said they aim to "initiate consolidation and centralization of the physician management structure."
