Red Cross Honors Volunteers posted August 26, 2008 Approximately 150 Red Cross volunteers and family members gathered for the Greater Chattanooga Area American Red Cross Annual All Volunteer Recognition Picnic, a celebration of and for its volunteer corps, on Saturday, Aug. 23. The event, held at Chester Frost Park, recognized the work of local Red Cross volunteers across its nine county service area and honored 11 outstanding individuals who have made a significant impact in the community. "As a volunteer-led organization we rely on people in our community to carry out our work," said Barbara Alexander, executive director of the Greater Chattanooga Area American Red Cross. "We are very fortunate to have more than 500 registered volunteers who provided 55,912 hours of service with a dollar value of more than $1.2 million in the past year. Without these dedicated volunteers, and the support of local donors, we would not have been to help those suffering losses due to house fires and storms, assist patients and families at local hospitals and nursing homes and teach lifesaving skills to thousands of area residents." This year's honorees included: -Rookie of the Year: Tom and Nancy Bibler - Disaster Action Team volunteers -Youth Volunteer of the Year: Hima Patel -Volunteer of the Year: Linda (Sparky) Sparks, RN - Disaster and Health and Safety volunteer -Emergency Services Award: Glen Reece -Northwest Georgia Emergency Services Award: Ron and Ann Born - Disaster Action Team volunteers -Hospital/Nursing Home Volunteer of the Year: Charlotte Harvey, Alexian Brothers -Human Resources Award: Ernie Young -Caring Samaritan Award: Tim Mickel, Former Board Chairman -Public Support Volunteer of the Year Award: Jerry Peyton Each recipient provided hours of work on behalf of the community, going beyond the norm: - helping local disaster victims, - making patients in nursing homes lives a bit easier, - supporting military members and their families serving in harm's way, and - expanding the scope of services by increasing our presence in outlying counties. "I am so proud of the work of these volunteers and call upon anyone who may have considered volunteering for the Red Cross to call our office at 423 265-3455 or visit our website at chattanoogaredcross.org to learn more about the many volunteer opportunities available in our said county service area," said Ms. Alexander. |
