Council Agrees On New Wrecker Ordinance
posted August 26, 2008

The City Council has agreed on a new wrecker ordinance that Councilman Jack Benson said "will not give preferential status to one operator."

The new "Traffic Incident Management Ordinance" will allow emergency management personnel to make a decision whether to call a firm with rotator equipment to major wrecks or to call other wrecker firms with regular recovery equipment to accidents where they could handle the job.

Wrecker firms without rotator equipment had complained they were being left out of a number of freeway accidents they are equipped to handle.

They may be considered if they have a 50-ton recovery truck or a 40-ton rotator on a 30-ton truck.

Wrecker firms must clear accident sites within 90 minutes.

Their personnel must undergo ongoing training and certification requirements.

The ordinance is in line with recommendations made by the city Beer and Wrecker Board.
