Robert W. Greene of Meigs County has been named to the position of state deputy commissioner of education.
Mr. Greene joined the department April 1, 2007 as assistant commissioner for resource and support services. In this role, Mr. Greene oversaw implementation of major improvements to state education funding of local school systems under BEP 2.0, a responsibility he will maintain as deputy commissioner, it was stated.
Rep. Eric Watson said, "I want to congratulate Robert Greene on his appointment to the position of Deputy Commissioner of Education. His experience as Meigs County Superintendent will be an asset to the Department of Education, a very important arm of our state government."
Mr. Greene served as superintendent of Meigs County Schools from 1981 to 2007 and earned the honor of Superintendent of the Year in 2006. Throughout his career, he has been an advocate for education at the local, regional and state levels. He was a charter member of the Tennessee Association of Administrator of Special Education; chaired the regional superintendent study council for six years; and was active in state superintendent organizations, it was stated.
Mr. Greene earned an EdS at Tennessee Technological University, a master's degree from Union College in Kentucky and his bachelor's degree at Tennessee Wesleyan College. Prior to becoming a superintendent, he was a school principal in Monroe County, and a teacher and coach in Monroe and Meigs counties beginning in 1972. Beyond education, he served on the local Chamber of Commerce, Health Advisory Council and Workforce Development Council.
Rep. Watson said, "I think it is a testament to Meigs County's dedication to education, and an honor for our community, to have a hometown leader serve as Deputy Commissioner for the Department of Education. I look forward to working with him in the upcoming year."
