Having The Fried Chicken Livers One Last Time At The Kreme House
posted August 27, 2008

The Kreme House in Ooltewah has been a local landmark for years. Through several different owners, it has stood as one of the only places to get a decent meal at a decent price.

The announcement came at lunchtime last Wednesday, the 20th. The staff was told then that the restaurant would be closing on the 29th. A week's notice to the staff and even less to the families who eat there weekly.

I was barely a teen when my Sunday school teacher took our small class in his old Model T Ford. Mr. Stoner had his father's car since he was a boy. He loaded us up and we all went for a snack.

I have been in there countless times since then. I've seen it remodeled at least twice and it has always been the place to go in Ooltewah. Now we've been given notice. Find somewhere else to eat.

I understand it's hard to say "no" to an offer of nearly a million dollars, but why does it have to be razed to the ground? Rumor has it that yet another bank will grace Highway 11.

I have written about the closure, called the local news stations, and rallied my family to eat there while they can. Seems history is passing by and few are taking notice.

I think I'll have the fried chicken livers, please.
