Battle Of Chickamauga 145th Anniversary Special Programs

A series of special programs will be held Saturday, Sept. 13 through Sunday, Sept. 21, in commemoration of the 145th Anniversary of the Battle
of Chickamauga. All programs will be presented on the Chickamauga Battlefield in Fort Oglethorpe.

On Sept. 19 and 20, 1863, two days of civil war battle scarred the fields and forests along Chickamauga Creek in northwest Georgia. At its conclusion, over 34,000 Americans would be counted as casualties, including 4,000 killed.

Park staff and volunteers will present a series of special walks, tours, and living history demonstrations interpreting the battle actions of 145
years ago. These free programs will be conducted at various locations around the battlefield. For all walking tours comfortable shoes and a bottle of water are recommended. A flashlight is recommended for the evening programs.

The Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center will be open from 8:30 a.m.
until 6:00 p.m. during this period.

Battlefield Tours:
10 a.m. and 2 p.m. - Car Caravan Tour of Chickamauga Battlefield -
Join a Park Ranger for a 90-minute car caravan tour covering the highlights
of the Battle of Chickamauga.

Sept. 18-21
Special Guest, author Rick Baumgartner, award-winning Civil War author, will be available for the signing of several books he has written from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. in the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center Bookstore.

Sept. 15
6:30 p.m. - Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest
Join a Park Ranger for a 90-minute, one-mile walking tour discussing
Brigadier General Nathan Bedford Forrest, a renowned Confederate cavalry commander who was recognized for his talents as a strategist, tactician, and leader in combat. Learn about Forrest's involvement in the Battle of Chickamauga.

Sept. 16
6:30 p.m.
Artillery and the Mounted Service
Join historian Richard Manion on a two-hour walking and driving tour that
will tell the stories of Artillery and the Mounted Service during the Battle of Chickamauga. This tour will visit numerous field artillery sites, and focus on the traditions and practices of artillery horses and how they served a battery. Moderate walking distances will be covered.

Sept. 17
6:30 p.m.
Kate Cumming "A Confederate Nurse"
Join a Park Ranger for a three-mile, 90-minute walk where 145 years ago Kate Cumming observed the horrors of battle. In the fall of 1862, Kate Cumming volunteered to work at Newsome Hospital in Chattanooga. She would remain there for a year until the summer of 1863, when the city was
evacuated. Two weeks after the Battle of Chickamauga, in early October
1863, Kate Cumming visited the field hospitals near Chickamauga Creek where
the great battle had been fought.

Sept. 18
6:30 p.m.
Johnson's Division Advances
Join a Park Ranger for a 90-minute walking and driving tour covering battle action that unfolded during the afternoon of Sept. 18, 1863 along Reeds Bridge Road and near Jay's Mill. On Sept. 18, Brigadier General
Bushrod Johnson's Division advanced across Peavine Ridge on the Reeds
Bridge Road. His objective was to cross Chickamauga Creek and strike the
Federal Army's left at Lee and Gordon's Mill. Walking distance is less than one mile.

Sept. 19
6:30 p.m.
Jays Mill to the Brotherton Farm
Join a Park Ranger on a 90-minute driving and walking tour that will follow the battle as it occurred on Sept. 19, 1863 when Confederate and
Federal soldiers waged a desperate fight in the fields and woods from Jays Mill to the Brotherton Farm. Walking distance is approximately one mile.

Free Bus Tour of Chickamauga Battlefield
Join a Park Ranger for a free 90-minute bus tour covering the highlights of the Battle of Chickamauga.

9:00 a.m. - Breckinridge Assaults the Union Left
Join a Park Ranger for a 90-minute, two-mile walking tour covering the
initial assault by on Sept. 20, 1863 by confederate soldiers led by
Major General John C. Breckinridge's Division.

9:30 a.m. - Battlefield Bicycle Tour
Join a Park Ranger on a seven to ten-mile, two to three-hour bicycle tour of Chickamauga Battlefield. Participants are encouraged to bring their own bicycle. All participants are required to wear a helmet. Outdoor
Chattanooga, a division of the City of Chattanooga Park's and Recreation
Department, will provide 10 Bianchi Milano Cruiser Bicycles and helmets for visitors without bicycles. Outdoor Chattanooga's bicycles will be available for adults and children under their supervision. Riders must be at least five feet tall to use bicycles provided by Outdoor Chattanooga. Reservations are
required if you intend to use one of the Outdoor Chattanooga bicycles, and
can be made by calling Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park
at 706 866-9241.

11:00 a.m. - Longstreet's Breach of the Federal line
Join a Park Ranger for a 90 minute, 2 mile walking tour near the Brotherton
Farm. Here on the late morning of Sept. 20, 1863, the Confederate Army
would deal a devastating blow to the Union Army. Lt. General James Longstreet's assault at the Brotherton Farm would send one-third of the
Union Army in flight from the battlefield.

2:00 p.m. - "W.C. Oates on Lytle Hill"
Join a Park Ranger for a 90 minute, 1 mile walking tour. This program will
tell the story of Colonel W.C. Oates and his 15th Alabama regiment. On
September 20, 1863 Oates and his brigade assisted in the attack on the
Union brigade of General W.H Lytle.

4:00 p.m. - Artillery and the Mounted Service

Battle of Chickamauga. This tour will visit numerous field artillery sites,

6:30 p.m. - Snodgrass Hill "The Final Hours"
Join a Park Ranger on a 90 minute, two-mile walking tour across the slopes of Snodgrass Hill. Here on the afternoon and evening hours of September 20, 1863, the final battle actions would seal an army's fate. Explore the consequences of battle decisions and what the Confederate and Union Armies both won and lost.

Living Historians portraying Union Artillerymen will demonstrate firing
light field artillery cannon. Demonstrations will be conducted near the Florida Monument on Lafayette Road. Parking will be available. Artillery programs will be conducted at: 10:00 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 4:00 p.m.

Infantry Demonstrations
Living historians portraying Union soldiers from the 21st Ohio Volunteer
Infantry Regiment, along with Confederate soldiers from the 37th Tennessee Infantry Regiment and the 1st Tennessee Infantry Regiment Co. H will be conducting demonstrations on tactics used by infantry troops during the Battle of Chickamauga. These demonstrations will be conducted at various locations on the battlefield.

Cavalry Demonstration
Join Confederate Cavalrymen as they discuss the role and tactics used
during the Battle of Chickamauga. Demonstrations will be held in the
McDonald Field near the Visitor Center. Programs will be held throughout the day.

Medical Program
Living Historians portraying the 17th Ohio Regimental Hospital will be
encamped at the Snodgrass Cabin. Throughout the day they will provide
programs interpreting the role of a regimental field hospital. Medical
equipment used in a field hospital will be on display.

Special Guests:
Author Perry Short will be available from 9:00 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. to
sign and answer questions about his new book "Generation of Warriors" in
the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center Bookstore.

Civil War Western Theater Artifact Display
Join historians Patrick Booth and Dennis Headly in the Chickamauga
Battlefield Visitor Center where they will display a collection of artifacts used during the Civil War's Western Theatre of Military Operations.

Sept. 21

9:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 2:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Free Bus Tour of Chickamauga Battlefield
Join a Park Ranger for a free 90-minute bus tour covering the highlights of the Battle of Chickamauga.

10:30 a.m. - Politics and War
Join a Park Ranger for a program that will discuss the political histories
of Chickamauga battle veterans John C. Breckinridge, Benjamin Helm, James
A. Garfield and John Wilder. This talk will take place in the Chickamauga
Battlefield Visitor Center and will last approximately 1 hour.

1:00 p.m. - Braxton Bragg
Join a Park Ranger for a 90 minute, walking and driving tour that will tell the story of one of the Civil War's most controversial personalities. General Bragg commanded the Confederate Army of Tennessee during the Battle of Chickamauga. This tour involves less than 1 mile of walking.

3:30 p.m. - Fallen Leaders at Chickamauga
Join a Park Ranger for a 90 minute, 1 mile walking tour visiting the sites
where Brigade Commanders fell in battle. Over the course of two days,
September 19 and 20, 1863 eight brigade commanders (Heg, Baldwin, Smith, Helm, Colquit, King, Deschler, and Lytle) sustained mortal wounds during the Battle of Chickamauga. Learn more about these brave leaders during this tour.
