Scenic Land School Appoints Anderson As New Head of School posted August 28, 2008
Mr. Anderson has 36 years of experience in private school education including roles as a teacher, head coach, camp director, development officer, and alumni affairs director. He currently serves as the Senior Development Officer for the University of the South, where his responsibilities have included cultivating and soliciting donations for the school’s capital campaign. The campaign recently concluded after raising $205 million dollars, surpassing a $180 million goal. Mr. Anderson joins Scenic Land following a search that has been in progress since June 1. He said, “This is an extraordinary opportunity that will require a collaborative effort on the part of everyone in our school community. I truly believe Scenic Land School has the potential to become the premiere alternative source for students with learning differences and I am excited for its future. I look forward with great enthusiasm to working with everyone in the Scenic Land School community and I am grateful to the board of trustees for their confidence in me." Established in 1966, Scenic Land is a private school serving students kindergarten through eighth grade with learning differences such as dyslexia and attention deficit disorder (AD/HD). Throughout its history the school has been committed to helping students eventually enroll and succeed in mainstream public or private schools. Earlier this year the school experienced financial shortfalls, but vigorous fund-raising efforts and a special lead gift of $1 million have laid the foundation for a substantial endowment and greater financial stability. “The limited size of the school and our individualized instruction requires additional revenue through continuous solicitation of donors. We were actively seeking someone with a proven track record in private school fund-raising and experience in education to complement the incredibly talented faculty we already have in place. I am confident that Yogi will enrich the programs of the school because of his strong desire to work with children,” said Jack Stanford, Interim Head. “Under his leadership we are looking forward to expanding our program to help as many deserving children in the community as possible.” Tom Jones, who currently serves as chairman of Scenic Land’s Board of Trustees, said, "I've had the pleasure of knowing Yogi Anderson since my days playing baseball as a child. With Yogi's lifelong love of children and his experience as a teacher, coach, camp director, and administrator both at the University of the South and Baylor School, I can't imagine there is a better qualified individual to lead Scenic Land School. I am also deeply appreciative of Jack Stanford for assisting us these last several months as Interim Head and also for directing our search that has landed Yogi as our new Head of School.” Mr. Anderson’s career in education includes serving as the director of Summer Programs at Baylor School. In that role he was responsible for managing programs for more than 1,200 children ages 4-15 each summer. Prior to that, he was head of the Alumni Association, head wrestling coach, and summer programs coordinator at the University of the South. From 1978-1986, he taught English at Notre Dame High School and also served as head wrestling coach. In addition, he has served on numerous academic committees at both the secondary and university levels, as well as several community volunteer boards. Mr. Anderson received a bachelor degree from University of the South in 1972. He and his wife, Joli, live on Signal Mountain and have two grown children and one grandchild. [Although classes for this school year began Aug. 11, applications for Scenic Land are ongoing.
