Coppinger To Lead County Commission; Mackey Is Vice Chairman
posted August 28, 2008

The County Commission on Thursday morning unanimously chose Jim Coppinger as chairman and Warren Mackey as vice chairman.

Commissioner Coppinger, of Hixson, has been on the commission for two years and is the former city fire chief.

Commissioner Mackey, of District 4, is a professor at Chattanooga State.

Prior to the vote, Commissioner Greg Beck again brought up the issue of rotating the chairmanship, saying Districts 4, 5 and 6 had not been in the leadership for 14 years.

He asked that the legal committee look into a system of rotating the chairmanship and vice chairmanship.

Commissioner Beck said, "Then you wouldn't have all the intrigue and the laughable situation we have now."

He said the current setup of the posts being open to anyone getting the most votes "is blatantly discriminatory."

His motion did not get a second, however.

Commissioner Curtis Adams said there are times "when you have a commissioner you don't want to be chairman."
