Bobby Clampett, better known to the golfing community today as one of the nation's best television commentators, will be evaluating his own game at the Chattanooga Classic presented by Black Creek.

Clampett, who is a long-time golf analyst for CBS and previously at TNT, has accepted a sponsor's exemption to play in the Chattanooga Classic October 16-19 at Black Creek Club.

"We're excited about having Bobby here," said tournament manager Sam Woolwine. "He was one of the best players on the Tour at one time in his career and he's looking forward to playing on the Champions Tour in a couple of years. And don't be misled by his absence on the PGA Tour because he's still got game."

Clampett is the second sponsor's exemption announced by the Chattanooga Classic. University of Tennessee at Chattanooga's Jonathon Hodge was the first. Hodge is one of the top-ranked amateurs in the country.

"My wife (Marianna) is looking forward to coming back to Chattanooga because her very best friend in the world lives on Lookout Mountain," Clampett said.

Rosalind Connor and Marianna Clampett were best friends growing up in Wadesboro, N.C. Though they are separated by a few hundred miles, they remain best friends.

"I must say my wife's ears perked up when she heard I had received a sponsor's exemption from Chattanooga," Clampett said.

The visit won't be Clampett's first to Chattanooga to play golf. He played several times at the Classic when the tournament was part of the regular Tour at Valleybrook.

The former two-time College Player of the year was a three-time All-American at BrighamYoung. He was also the top-ranked amateur in the world in 1978.

Clampett played the Tour for over a decade, winning the 1982 Southern Open and finishing second in four other events. He also had a third-place finish in the U.S. Open in '82 on the same Pebble Beach layout where he won two California Amateurs.

In between working on golf course design and for CBS, he has played in two Nationwide Tour events this year. Clampett finished tied for 39th at the Price Cutter Charity Championship in Springfield, Mo, shooting an 11-under 277. He failed to make the cut at the Prince George's County Open just outside of the nation's capital.

"I appreciate the opportunity to play," Clampett said.
