County Commission Chairmanship Selection Process Works Well - And Response
posted August 28, 2008

Commissioner Greg Beck's proposal to rotate the chairmanship of the County Commission sequentially among all the commissioners sounds good and fair. Until you analyze it, that is.

Since the County Commission is composed of nine persons elected from districts roughly equal in population, the commission itself is already, by definition, a representative body. But where does it say that the chairmanship of that body must be "representative?"

To require that the chairmanship rotate among all the commissioners in turn would imply that all are equally capable of the demands of leading that body. Surely Commissioner Beck realizes that, human nature being what it is, that is simply not true. It would be just as logical to posit that any of the 435 Congressmen would make a good Speaker of the House.

Beck complains that it has been at least 14 years since the chairman came from Districts 4, 5, or 6. Well, there's probably a reason for that, having a great deal to do with those persons' ability to garner the support of their colleagues. That's pretty much how democratic institutions work, Mr. Beck.

I submit Greg Beck's suggestion that the Hamilton County Commission rotate equally the chairman and vice chairman positions is 'not' in the best interests of the county.

I mean, Mr. Beck complains that we haven't had leadership positions in recent years from Districts 4, 5, & 6 in the past 14 years.

And that's no doubt a good thing. I mean, take District 4 for example.
How would you like to have had District 4's William Cotton as the County Commission chairman?

The residents of District 4 should be proud to now have a fine, outstanding leader in Warren Mackey, and the County Commission now has leadership in both Warren Mackey & Jim Coppinger all Hamilton County citizens can be proud of - and confident in.
