Atlanta Braves Reel In Florida Marlins Thursday, 4-2 posted August 28, 2008 ATLANTA -- Charlie Morton provided yet another productive rebound effort and was aided by a Brian McCann three-run homer that helped the Braves claim a 4-2 win over the Marlins at Turner Field on Thursday night. While claiming their first home series victory since the All-Star break, the Braves saw Morton face the minimum through five innings and limit the Marlins to two runs on four hits in six innings. Morton, who won for just the second time in his past eight starts, was nearly perfect through the first five innings. After allowing Luis Gonzalez's fourth-inning, one-out single, he got Jorge Cantu to ground into an inning-ending double play. Before the defense aided Morton as he began to unravel in the sixth inning, McCann gave his pitcher a comfortable lead with a three-run, fifth-inning homer off Anibal Sanchez. The All-Star catcher's first long ball since Aug. 9 came after Sanchez issued an intentional walk to Chipper Jones with one out and a runner at third base. After proving dominant through the first five innings, Morton was fortunate to allow just two runs in the sixth inning, which began with consecutive doubles by Dan Uggla and John Baker. The inning's first out came when left fielder Brandon Jones made a leaping catch denied Hanley Ramirez a potential three-run homer. Gonzalez followed with a double to right that would have scored two runs if Kelly Johnson hadn't made a strong relay throw to the plate to retire Paul Lo Duca. __________ Adapted from MLB.com |
