Getting It Hot At Azteca’s Mexican Restaurant

Azteca’s Mexican Restaurant is at 3805 Hixson Pike
Azteca’s Mexican Restaurant at 3805 Hixson Pike, is another restaurant that was recommended to us by a reader. They are in the old Padrino’s location and and refer to their food as “Authentic Mexican Cuisine”.

Several changes have been made to the interior (or maybe the previous tenant made these changes as we haven’t been there since Padrino’s). It appears to be very clean and our server was friendly, and there was certainly no language problem.

When Wayne ordered the hotter salsa, they asked if we wanted hot or really, really hot! He went with the really, really hot, but said it wasn’t as hot as he had expected. However, about halfway into the bowl, the heat seemed to catch up. I thoroughly enjoyed the taste of the mild salsa. I felt it could have been a tad chunkier, but the taste, a bit on the sweet side, was great.

The menu starts with Appetizers including a multitude of different style nachos, along with various dips. Prices range from $2.75 for a Guacamole Salad to $8 for Nachos grilled with chicken and steak.

Wayne ordered the Burrito Supreme ($6.50). This was quite large! The order consists of shredded beef rolled in a large tortilla with rice and beans inside. It is then topped with nacho cheese, lettuce, sour cream and tomatoes. He really liked it and said he would order it again. He also said it had a fresh taste, not as if it had been pre-made.

My order was for the Flauntas ($7.50). I could not eat everything on my plate. In fact, I probably took home more than I ate at the restaurant. You get four rolled corn tortillas filled with beef or chicken (I chose chicken), deep fried and served with lettuce, sour cream, guacamole and tomatoes. I was served rice and beans on the side. Everything was extremely hot. I really like it when a restaurant serves you HOT food as opposed to lukewarm!

The beans are your average refried beans topped with cheese, while the rice was a bit better than most. It was more moist and not as dried up as what you are served the majority of the time. I often wonder why restaurants even bother to serve that dried up rice when it seems anyone rarely eats it. If it were prepared to a more moist consistency as this was, more people would eat it. The flauntas were crunchy and the chicken was moist and tender.

Other dinner entrees include Chimichangas, Chile Relleno and for $10 you could order the Grande Dinner (one each – burrito, chalupa, chile relleno, enchilada, and taco with rice and beans), for a very large appetite. Azteca’s also has Fajitas priced from $10 to $12.50, salads and build your own combination plates. You can chose from their list of selections – two items are $5.95 or three items at $6.45. Each is served with rice and beans.

Little Azteca plates range from $3.50 to $3.75. They do offer chicken nuggets, but all the other plates are “real” Mexican dishes such as tacos, burritos, enchiladas and quesadillas. Azteca’s also offers a Vegetarian menu. There is also a luncheon menu served from 11:00 AM until 3:00 PM.

Other offerings include Huaraches, Pambazos, Toluquena, and Tortas. Fillings include Chorizo, Lengua, Carne Asada, Polo, and several others.

I am told by my sources that the best thing on the menu is Shrimp Diablo. The only thing on the menu I found with a similar name was Camarones a la diabla ($10.45), large shrimp grilled with onions and special sweet red sauce served with rice and beans.

If Azteca’s was located on our side of the river, we might eat there more often. If you are in the Hixson area, you might enjoy a visit. We felt the food was good and is certainly worth a stop. The prices seem to be in range with other restaurants with the most expensive item on the menu being $12.50 (Fajita Azteca – chicken, steak and shrimp fajitas). Now, if they could only find the recipe for my favorite Padrino’s item – the La Tostada Linda.

Hours for Azteca’s Mexican Restaurant are seven days a week, 11 a.m. until 10 p.m.
