Testimony Quartet And Jeff Hullender Family Will Perform At Ringgold Depot
posted August 29, 2008

The Testimony Quartet and the Jeff Hullender Family will bring their intricate harmonies and dynamic energy to Sacred Sounds Fridays at the Ringgold Depot at Depot Street and U.S. 41 Friday, Sept. 5 at 7:30 p.m. in a special concert for the Share America Foundation, Inc. Randall Franks, "Officer Randy Goode" from TV's "In the Heat of the Night" will emcee. Ticket donation is $5.

"There is nothing like being present when history is being made," Mr. Franks said. "These talented performers will present shows which will become part of our region's musical lore for years to come."

Testimony Quartet includes tenor Tim Owens, baritone Howard Stewart, and lead singer Heath Allen and bass singer Ken Hicks, a US 101 radio personality who has been spinning soul-touching tunes on the "Gospel Road" Sundays from 6-9:30 a.m. since 1984.

Mr. Hicks said he hopes that all their fans come to be part of the cheering section for live recording projects.

He added that recording live in such a historic venue while honoring the tradition of sharing music from generation to generation will make it a night to remember.

Testimony baritone singer Howard Stewart carries on singing family tradition. He began his career traveling with his father Lem Stewart and the Noblemen Quartet.

Now the Dove nominee shares his experiences with younger quartet members.

"I hope I am being an example of the correct reason to do this," he said. "Heath is an impressive young man. He listens to what you tell and he tries to do it. I have always told him you need to try to feel what the writer was writing. It's not all about doing it pretty it's about conveying the message."

Mr. Hullender learned his music traveling with his singing parents — Jr. and Thelma.

The former Gold City Quartet member is passing his experience and traditions on to his own children Justin, 20, and Emily, 15.

Although they have been performing together for a while, they will be making their recording debut at the concert.

"This is going to be the first real deal," he said. "We'll be doing everything from a little bluegrass sound to traditional Southern gospel and even some original material written by Emily."

The event is a fundraiser for the Pearl and Floyd Franks Scholarship Fund. The Share America Foundation, Inc., a Georgia non-profit, presents scholarships to talented musicians who excel in the Appalachian musical arts.

Donations for tickets are adults: $5, Children 5 and under free with adult.
