The County Commission is not expected to name an interim County School Board member to replace Debra Matthews, who died Sunday.
Commission Chairman Bill Hullander said since the Nov. 4 election is less than 120 days away that the commission will likely "let the voters decide."
He said there are only two school board meetings prior to the election.
Warren Mackey, commissioner for District 4, said he plans to attend those board meetings.
He said, "I won't be a voting member, but I will be there in case anything of importance to District 4 comes up."
Commissioner Mackey said he also agrees that an interim should not be named.
He said he has heard the name of about three potential candidates he could possibly support.
Commissioner Mackey said several community groups in the district have told him they would like to have input on the new school board member.
He said he would like to see the groups get together "and see which candidate they prefer. Then I will rally behind that candidate."
Two potential candidates have already picked up qualifying papers at the election office.
One is Mia Pierce, daughter of City Councilman Leamon Pierce.
Another is George Ricks Sr.
The funeral for Ms. Matthews, who was 58, was Thursday.
In the election in Red Bank to replace Ronnie Moore, who died while on a vacation in Europe, Ethan Anderson has qualified.
Greg Jones and Dallas Rucker Jr. have picked up papers.
