Erlanger Offers Fitness Opportunities And "Boomer Basics" posted August 29, 2008 Erlanger will offer HealthLink Plus fitness opportunities and the first session of this fall's "Boomer Basics," a series focusing on health topics for the Baby Boomer generation. Events are free and registration is required unless otherwise noted. Monday, Sept. 8 Low Impact Exercise 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. Northgate Mall Join us for a free, low-impact exercise class led by an exercise physiologist from Siskin Therapy Services with Erlanger. Bariatric Support Group 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. Chattanooga Lifestyle Center Bariatric Support Group meetings are for individuals scheduled to have Bariatric surgery or who have already had weight loss surgery. Surgical Weight Management Seminar 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. Chattanooga Lifestyle Center Area residents 100 or more pounds overweight and /or with health problems related to obesity are invited to learn more about Erlanger Bariatric Services Program. Tuesday, Sept. 9 Adaptive Tai Ji (Tai Chi) 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. The Fitness Center at Siskin Hospital Tai-Ji (Tai Chi) is a great form of exercise, especially for those with osteoarthritis. It can help you build leg muscles, strengthen posture, and improve balance, flexibility, and mobility. Aquatic exercise also allows you to work out without the jarring and jolting that can be experienced during land exercising. No registration is necessary. Boomer Basics: "Can't Smile Without You" 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. Erlanger East Campus (Gunbarrel Road) Kicking off Boomer Basics, Erlanger's informational series for Baby Boomers, Drs. Jeffrey Gefter and Phil Megison will discuss new options for the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia, a condition occurring most often in women 50 and older that causes severe facial pain and numbness. Learn more about the disease and how stereotactic radiosurgery, a highly-focused and computerized radiation, targets specific facial muscles and relieves pain. Registration is required. Friday, Sept. 12 Low Impact Exercise Cancelled Core Training Class 10:00 - 11:00 a.m. The Fitness Center at Siskin Hospital The body's core muscles, lying deep within the torso, are the foundation for all movement. They stabilize the spine and provide a solid foundation for movement in the extremities. This free class will introduce several exercises that are the building blocks for core muscle strength and coordination. Training the muscles of the core corrects postural imbalances that can lead to injuries and help develop functional fitness - that is, fitness that is essential to both daily living and regular activities.
