TLPCA Holds First Regional Meeting On Sept. 5
posted August 29, 2008

The Tennessee Licensed Professional Counselors Association is a not-for-profit, professional and educational organization dedicated to the growth and enhancement of mental health counselors in Tennessee.

Their mission is to enhance the profession of mental health counseling in Tennessee, and its regions, through licensing, advocacy, education, and professional development.

Their vision is to be the state organization representing licensed professional mental health counselors with consistent standards of education, training, licensing practice, advocacy and ethics.

TLPCA will hold the first Chattanooga Area Regional Meeting on Friday, Sept. 5 at CADAS, 207 Spears Avenue, Chattanooga, Tn. 37405. TLPCA Regional Coordinator for the Chattanooga Area is Rebecca Stein, 423 643-1623.

This meeting is a networking and informational meeting for Licensed Professional Counselors, individuals preparing for licensure, university students and counseling educators. Topic will be “Challenges for Our Profession: LPCs in Tennessee.”

Changes in Tennessee licensure laws require information meetings such as planned by TLPCA for dissemination of these changes. Currently an applicant for licensure in Tennessee must have completed 1,000 hours of face-to-face client counseling contact with 100 hours of supervision over a period neither less than two years nor more than four.

Because the Tennessee State Health Related Board wishes to uphold the highest possible standards for training and experience, standards in keeping with the majority of other states, a new rule was promulgated which will require the licensure applicant to provide proof of 3,000 hours of post-master’s experience. Compliance with these new rules will become effective July 1, 2009.

TLPCA members, in compliance with the State Licensing Board, are planning meetings statewide to make certain that this information is available to and understood by those currently pursuing licensure along with all interested mental health professionals and educational institutions.
