Lady Flames Soccer 7-0 Over Visiting King College
posted August 29, 2008

Six Lee players posted goals as the talent-rich Lady Flames zipped to a 7-0 victory over 15th-ranked King College on an outstanding Friday evening for soccer.

The host team wasted no time in grabbing a 4-0 margin by halftime and showed the Lee fans why they are ranked No. 3 in the NAIA pre-season poll.

Coach Matt Yelton used a variety of combination as his Lady Flames officially opened the 2008 season in convincing style. A total of 22 players saw action before the 90 minutes expired.

Freshmen Sandra Kaelin and Jamie Achten grabbed their share of the spotlight. Kaelin had two goals and Jamie Achten followed with four assists. All-American Kristina Chase followed with a pair of assists, but it was the play on the flanks that caught the attention of Yelton. Time and again newcomer Christensen led the Lee offensive charge and helped set up early scores. On the other side, Chase was the frontrunner.

It took only 3:15 for Lee to put the first points of the season on the board. Jenna Achten received a perfect assist from Marina Lima and put the Lady Flames up 1-0. At the 14:31 mark, Kaelin got her first Lee career goal. The double assist came from Jamie Achten and Chase.

Some seven minutes later, Christensen claimed her first score as a Lady Flame. Again, Jamie Achten and Chase got credit for the assist. Kaelin came right back with her second score at the 29:57 mark. The name of Jamie Achten popped up again on the assist chart.

The Lady Flames wasted no time in putting points on the board in the second stanza. Senior Tiffany Cox went to work and got the fourth and final assist from the ever-present Jamie Achten. Lee made it 6-0 in the 64th minute when Meg Willette knocked in an unassisted goal. In the 89th minute, Savannah Neely tallied on Stephanie Barrios’ assist.

In a mild understatement, Yelton admitted that his squad played well. “I was pleased and was especially proud of how hard all the girls played. We still have a lot of room to improve. I like this club because we have a lot more players capable of providing goals. We played well together and our flanks controlled the game, especially in the first half.”

Lee attempted 24 shots in the game and 17 of those attempts were on goal. The visiting King team was able to get off just two shots against the stingy Lee defenders. Abbey Kitts had 10 saves for the visitors. The hard-fought but clean contest was one of the few in recent history played without a single yellow card.

The Lady Flames will go on the road for the first time on Tuesday, traveling up Lookout Mountain to face Covenant College. They will return to the Lee Soccer Field next Friday and host a strong William Carey (Miss.) team in a 7 p.m. contest.
