Why I Avoid The Northshore - And Response (2)
posted August 29, 2008

Sad to see other people experiencing the same things that have kept me
off the vaunted Northshore this year: young women needing money for
whatever drug, a gauntlet of losers hustling you by the stairs at the
closed greasey-spoon, and also a bunch of thugs who migrate in from
somewhere with the express intention of random havoc, otherwise known as
crime, threatening you not only on the bridge, but the entire Riverwalk
is becoming an insecure place.

Where are the police? When will the first murder be?

I visit the Northshore relatively often. I have never had a problem.

I admit that I have never been there at 2 a.m. Maybe that is when it is such a horrible place. If so, why would you want to be out roaming the Northshore at such an hour?

Nowhere in Mr. Smickel's letter does it say these unsafe conditions existed at 2 a.m. His attempt to purposefully misdirect its message leads me to wonder about Mr. Yates' agenda.

It hasn't always been like this, but the day to day crowd mix has greatly deteriorated since the area was first developed and the crime rate has risen accordingly. I've seen the day to day crowd mix evolve from yuppie to touristy to seedy or scary at times. I've seen roving thugs and read about vehicles with smashed windows. I've seen the graffiti which was a derisive middle finger pointed towards the property of others and the rights of others to a clean, wholesome atmosphere.

I seldom see security.

I no longer feel comfortable about browsing the shops along Frazier or sitting in the park, two activities we used to enjoy. I would like to see that changed, but change will only come about with better security.
