Travel Trends: What’s New For 2009? by West Oehmig posted September 2, 2008
While there is no doubt that America and much of Western Europe is in an economic slowdown, there remains a strong core of travelers ready, willing and going places. The buzz words this year include experiential, bonding, renewing, relaxing, adventurous, comfortable, refined, tasteful, challenging, exciting, rewarding, and value. As we mentioned in a previous article, cruising on ships, riverboats, and barges is a very popular vacation option, particularly in destinations where the dollar remains weak. Not only is there a great variety of vessels from which to choose, there are wonderful options in accommodations, itineraries, and styles. I prefer cruises that are all inclusive of taxes, tips and even drinks. Though it appears they are more expensive than some of their competitors, the fact is that many times the lower priced trip ends up costing more. Those chits you sign for most every little thing add up in a hurry. China is in the limelight now after hosting the fantastic Summer Olympics. Despite its distance from the U.S., this ancient, yet incredibly modern (in places) country truly offers the visitor highly unique experiences. Unless you are quite the intrepid traveler, I suggest joining a small group tour where you can relax and learn and enjoy while others take on responsibility for logistics, luggage, and other critical details. In Southern Africa, new tented ‘camps’ are springing up to serve the needs of up market wildlife lovers. These ‘camps’ are in fact small, luxurious outposts that offer visitors extremely comfortable accommodations, expert guides, wonderful dining and the opportunity to move safely amongst the animals. In Kenya, the travel industry is rebounding well after political turmoil last year. Most travelers reported no problems even much of the press locked on to the negative aspects of the Kenyan situation. I personally would not hesitate to return to this beautiful and intriguing African nation. Australia and New Zealand are welcoming more and more Americans each year. Fantastic landscapes, visitor minded residents, great fishing and golf and diving, fine lodges and hotels and resorts abound. Plan a minimum of two to three week journey to do it right, or consider a lengthy segment of the many world cruises now available for next winter. Closer to home, Bermuda remains one of my favorite island destinations. Understated, classy, beautiful and friendly, this island is refined and always attractive to those who value such things. If you want to party, party, there are plenty of active destinations in the Bahamas, Jamaica, and Cancun to suit your needs. Many of the huge cruise ships offer a large dose of this activity too. The internet abounds in places to go for party lovers especially at bargain basement rates. Most of all the countries on Earth understand the importance of tourism to their economies. Great efforts are being made to greet travelers with sincere service and appreciation all over the world. It is our most pleasant, happy and exciting duty to help those travelers who value personal service in planning, executing, and delivering travel dreams and building wonderful memories with family and friends. Do we know it all? Of course not. While each of our consultants are specialists in certain destinations, activities or travel products, it is impossible for one consultant to ‘know it all’. What we do have is a network of specialists to call upon for their expertise to assist you on most any trip you can imagine. We provide the oversight and management of your file, serve as your advocate and/or problem solver, and give you local accountability. Please call us if we may be of service. Happy traveling to each of you! (Since 1977, West Oehmig has guided TVTA. He is a graduate of Baylor School and the University of Virginia.
