Changes On City Auditor Won't Be On November Ballot posted September 2, 2008 City charter changes dealing with the city auditor will not be on the November ballot. Mayor Ron Littlefield told the City Council on Tuesday that action was needed at tonight's meeting, but a proposed ordinance did not have the necessary support - especially with council members Dan Page and Linda Bennett absent. Mayor Littlefield said, "We can work on it over the next two years (unless there is another general election) to try and see if we can have a cooperative arrangement." However, Councilman Leamon Pierce said he won't go along with a plan for the mayor and the council to share the current auditor, Stan Sewell. He said, "This whole thing has been drug out to the point that it's tainted. It makes me question what this administration is hiding and what is going on behind closed doors that we are not aware of." Councilman Pierce said Mr. Sewell was too involved in drafting the ordinance. He said, "There is now way we could bring Stan Sewell in and he not be beholden to Ron Littlefield and Dan Johnson." Mayor Littlefield responded, "That's insulting." Councilwoman Carol Berz said the failure of the ordinance "leaves the mayor with an auditor and the council right back where we stand now." The council has a budget analyst, but the holder of that position has not been involved in city audits. The current analyst is Randy Burns. Councilman Pierce said the city charter calls for the council to have an independent auditor. |
