Brown Lifts GPS Volleyball Bruisers Past Soddy-Daisy by special report to The Chattanoogan posted September 2, 2008
The young ladies on coach Paul Brock’s volleyball roster have a combined total of 23 state championship rings – some in volleyball, some in softball and some in track and field. After Thursday’s impressive 3-0 victory at home against Soddy-Daisy, the Bruisers displayed why they may be able to add even more rings in the near future. The defending Division II state volleyball champions made it look relatively easy against previously unbeaten Soddy-Daisy with three straight wins (25-16, 26-24 and 25-23). “The key for us is everyone staying healthy,’’ Brock said. "Really, everybody has only been together for two weeks. We’ll continue to come around. “Soddy-Daisy is a good team and we made them look bad tonight. They’re really good. “To get back to championship volleyball, we’ve still got to step up. We’re not blocking as well as we should and our timing is still off. We still lack chemistry.’’ GPS (3-1) suffered a home loss recently to Red Bank. “I just hope we see them again this weekend in the championship game of the Choo Choo at East Ridge,’’ Brock said. “They spanked us at our place and that should inspire us.’’ Jasmine Brown led GPS on Tuesday with 47 aces, 12 digs, 4 kills and two aces. “Jasmine did a great job today,’’ Brock said. “Really, with us it’s not the coaching. It’s the athletes. I’m just an organizer at times.’’ Soddy-Daisy (3-1) was paced by Savannah Hartman, who had 11 digs and eight kills. She helped rally the Lady Trojans in the third game after they fell behind, 16-4. “I was proud of the way Savannah led us back,’’ Soddy-Daisy coach Lorri Johnson said. “But we’re showing no consistency. We can play as well as anybody, but there is no consistency. They are driving me nuts. “We’ve got to have better blocking and get people down on defense.’’ Andrea Johnson added 11 kills and nine assists for Soddy-Daisy. “And we were glad to get Hayli Raines back in the lineup,’’ Johnson said. “She has been injured, but today she had four kills and two assists.’’ TUESDAY’S STATISTICS SODDY-DAISY Savannah Hartman (8 kills, 11 digs) Abbey Thaxton (15 digs) Shelby Garrin (8 assists) Andrea Johnson (11 kills, 9 assists) Ashlee England (4 kills, 2 blocks) Hayli Raines (4 kills, 2 assists) GPS McKenzie Stokes (9 digs, 3 aces) Megan Givens (29 digs, 2 aces) Whitney Hammond (9 kills, 2 blocks, 15 digs) Heather Parman (13 kills, 1 ace, 11 digs) Jordan Grant (2 kills, 1 block) Jasmine Brown (47 assists, 2 aces, 4 kills) Katie Dorris (3 kills, 1 block, 7 digs) Danna Myatt (9 kills, 4 blocks) (E-mail Stan Crawley at wscrawley@earthlink.net)
