Mayor Glasscock: Open letter To An Anonymous "Concerned Citizen"
posted September 2, 2008

Normally I do not respond to "Concerned Citizen" letters, which like the one I am going to address are usually unsigned, as was this one.

However, the ridiculous, unfounded and completely erroneous content of this particular piece of fiction requires a reply:

First off, with regard to (the charge that) myself and the other commissioners are more concerned about beer licenses than other important city business is wrong. Our city charter designated the city commission as our official beer board and as long as our police department checks out and approves applicants, we have no choice but to approve same or face a lawsuit. Some of us would, like myself, just as soon not be on that board, but we did not write the charter.

To state that you would rather see fines levied on persons who throw trash in Stringer's Branch than "speeding drunks running red lights" or being ticketed for not coming to a complete stop prior to a right turn on red is not only ridiculous, but borders on insanity.

With regard to our spring cleanup, your opinion that we only police Dayton Boulevard and do not enter the neighborhoods is completely false, and if you would participate in one of these events you would see that we try to touch on each and every street in town.

If you are truly a "Concerned Citizen of Red Bank" and know of somebody who dumps trash, garbage, tires, etc. as you allege, then do your civic duty and notify our codes enforcement official. His name is Jason Chauncey and his cell number is 320-5252, or simply notify the public works department. You do not have to identify yourself, but you do need to come forward and help rather than criticize us.

If the writer of this complaint takes offense to my reply, I offer no apology but ask sincerely that you come forward and talk to one of the commissioners. We are all true "Concerned Citizens."

Joe Glasscock
Mayor
Red Bank
