Third Ranked Lee Women Blank Covenant 9-0
posted September 2, 2008

Junior Marina Lima scored three goals and senior Kristina Chase tallied two goals and two assists as the No. 3 ranked Lee Lady Flames blasted host Covenant College 9-0 on Tuesday afternoon.

The Lady Flames wasted no time in jumping out to a 4-0 halftime advantage and before the second 45 minutes had ticked away, coach Matt Yelton had cleared his bench for the second straight game. In two outings, Lee has outscored its opponents 16-0.

“We played really well again,” said Yelton. “Our passing is making a huge difference with this team. The passes are so sharp and crisp and our girls are playing so well together right now.” Yelton praised the Lady Scots. “They never quit,” he noted. “And it would not surprise me if we see them again in the national tournament.”

While Lima was knocking three scores and Chase posted the double-double, freshman Sandra Kaelin scored two goals for the second straight game. Junior Samantha Hare and freshman Jamie Achten had Lee’s other goals as Lee pushed its overall series record to 7-5 against Covenant.

In the assist department, seniors Tiffany Cox and Meg Willette joined Chase with a pair of dish-offs each. Luana Novaes, Candice Shelton and Lauren Good collected the other assists for the 2-0 Lady Flames.

The Lady Flames attempted 24 shots and 19 were on goal. They also had 12 corner kicks. On the other hand, Covenant got off only one shot and it kicked away after hitting the post. Lee’s Leigha Terry played the first half in goal, while Elyse Cottrell played second 45 minutes.

Lee played without the Christensen twins (Christine and Linn). “Both could have played, but we didn’t want to take a chance,” said Yelton. “I expect we will have both ready to go on Saturday evening.”

Saturday’s match against William Carey University (Miss.) is expected to be much more of a challenge for the Lady Flames. Last year in the Region XIII final, Lee defeated the Lady Hatters 2-0. “They are always a rugged and very physical team,” said Yelton. “We are certain to face a stiff challenge.”
