The City Council of East Ridge may not ask voters to change the current setup regarding its city manager.
The council previously approved several proposed charter changes, including one changing the section involving the city manager.
As approved, it said a new city manager could not be removed for at least 12 months after being hired except for "incompetence, malfeasance, misfeasance or neglect of duty."
It said the city manager must have a bachelor's degree in public administration, 3-5 years in municipal government and be certified by the International Cities/Counties Association.
In cases of removal, the city manager could demand written charges and a hearing.
However, the council will now consider deleting that item from the charter changes.
The ordinance to be considered says:
"BE IT ORDAINED by the City Council of the City of East Ridge, Tennessee that Ordinance No. 849, which is an Ordinance submitting to referendum several sections to be amended of the Charter of the City of East Ridge be modified and amended to provide that Section 5-F concerning City Manager Appointment, Salary and Removal hereby be deleted from Ordinance No. 849 and that no item be placed on the referendum amending Section 5-F of the City Charter."
The council will hold two special called meetings on the issue.
The first will be Thursday at 7 p.m. to consider the matter on first reading, and the second will be Friday at 2 p.m. for second reading.
