Comcast Donates To Unity In The Community
posted September 3, 2008

The Comcast Foundation is donating $10,000 to Unity in the Community, a neighborhood revitalization effort launched last year by local churches and social service agencies in cooperation with the City of Chattanooga. "What a blessing Comcast is to our community," states Area Commander of The Salvation Army, Major Jim Lawrence. "Not only have they built an entire playground for the East Lake Community at The Salvation Army, but now are donating monetarily as well." The donation will go to further the efforts of Unity in the Community in making a positive, enduring difference in the neighborhoods of Chattanooga.

The presentation of the award will be made at the Unity in the Community meeting set for 10 a.m. Thursday in Chattanooga Mayor Ron Littlefield's Conference Room at City Hall on the third floor.

Unity in the Community, with Comcast's partnership, launched its inaugural "adopt-a-block" project on May 3rd at the Salvation Army's East Lake Community Center.

205 volunteers from Comcast joined other local volunteers in a four hour work commitment to assemble new playground equipment Comcast purchased for the children who come to the Salvation Army's East Lake Community Center.

The volunteers also installed motion sensor lights for the playground and basketball court to lengthen the time young people from the neighborhood can benefit from the safe haven at the Salvation Army facility. They cleaned and painted throughout the facility, and some volunteers made efforts to spend time playing with the children in the center.
