Revenue Officers Padlock Club Phoenix, Then Club Pays Up posted September 5, 2008 State revenue officers on Friday padlocked an East Chattanooga club that has been the focus of a number of police calls. However, officials said the club later paid off the money owed and was to be back open tonight. Signs were posted Friday morning at Club Phoenix at 4251 Bonny Oaks Dr. that the club was closed for non-payment of taxes. The club had been the scene of a small fire on Thursday night. The Chattanooga Beer and Wrecker Board in June had suspended the club's license on a citation of operating as a disorderly business. The citation stems from an incident on May 18 when Club Phoenix had a near-capacity crowd inside the building when fighting broke out. Rapper Gucci Mane appeared at the club that night, and he reportedly was booked again this weekend for a sold-out show. Police said in the earlier incident that approximately 600 people were inside the club and another hundred or more were outside in the parking lot. Club Phoenix has a permit for a maximum occupancy of 635. The club operated by Thomas Kenton is at the site of the former Governor's Lounge. |
