Highlights At The County Schools Next Week

Here are highlights at the Hamilton County Schools next week:

1) Red Bank High School – ongoing - Student Council is currently running a “the shirt off my back” campaign to benefit the clothing drive for the Salvation Army and victims of hurricane Gustav.

2) Monday, Sept. 8 – Big Ridge Elementary School, 2:00 p.m. Fitness Track Dedication. Congressman Zach Wamp, Commissioner Jim Coppinger, Board Member Everett Fairchild and State Senator Bo Watson will be on hand as the school dedicates their new track equipment. Commissioner Coppinger helped fund the equipment. Congressman Wamp, who has the FIT Kids Act in Congress, will be attending to present the school with a flag flown over the Capitol in recognition of the fitness initiatives at Big Ridge.

3) Tuesday, Sept. 8 - Harrison Elementary, 2:00 p.m. September 8-12 is Hero Week at Harrison Elementary. On Tuesday, they will have an assembly with the Central High ROTC presenting the flag. School board member Chester Bankston will be on hand to introduce County Mayor Claude Ramsey to students. County Mayor Ramsey attended Harrison as a young boy. He will tell students who some of his heroes were when he was a student at Harrison, who some of his heroes are now, and remind them that we are all someone’s hero at sometime. What we do every day, counts.

4) Thursday, Sept. 11 – Falling Water Elementary, 8:45 a.m., 9/11 ceremony. In remembrance of those who lost their lives during the tragic events of September 11, 2001, the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 203, will present an American flag to the faculty and students. Those attending will include Hamilton County School Board member Rhonda Thurman, Soddy-Daisy Mayor Bob Privett, State Rep. Richard Floyd, Commissioner Fred Skillern, Soddy-Daisy Commissioners David Skiles, Geno Shipley, Jim Adams and Patti Skates, along with Soddy-Daisy City Manager Janice Cagle. An honor guard comprised of members of Chapter 203 will present the colors, and Mr. Charlie Hobbs, Honor Guard Captain of Chapter 203, is scheduled to address the school assembly. Rep. Floyd will also present a state flag to the school.

5) Sale Creek High School – Thursday, Sept. 11, Memorial Ceremony by JROTC.

6) Friday, Sept. 12 – Soddy Daisy HS, 9:00 a.m. SDHS Renaissance Program. Honors students with perfect attendance and excellent grades from last semester. Mrs. Rhonda Thurman is the speaker and nearly all elected officials from the SDHS area will be attending.

7) Friday, September 12, 6:00 p.m. - Hixson Elementary School, 4th Annual Picnic on the Lawn. Families, special guests, community representatives, and staff members are invited for an evening of food, fun, and fellowship. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets; the hot dogs, chips, soft drinks, and desserts are free.
