Attorney Says Overstreet Did Not Follow Through On Promise To Schools posted September 5, 2008 The attorney for former Sheriff Billy Long said the cooperating witness against him - the Rev. Eugene Overstreet - made a $100,000 pledge to the Hamilton County Schools in 2002 and did not fulfill it. Attorney Jerry Summers said in a motion filed in Federal Court that it is another indicator that Overstreet is manipulative and untruthful. Attorney Summers is seeking to have Judge Sandy Mattice order a psychological examination of Overstreet, who runs a local funeral home. Attorney Summers has written a letter to County School Supt. Dr. Jim Scales asking him for any information on whether the schools received the $100,000. He said the pledge was mentioned several times in appearances by Overstreet before the City Council. He said the money was "to assist needy children in Chattanooga with their education and their pursuit of academics regardless of race." |
