Chattanooga Theatre Centre Produces A Christmas Carol posted September 5, 2008 The Chattanooga Theatre Centre has announced the return of a holiday tradition, the presentation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol Nov. 21 through Dec. 19, on the MainStage of the Theatre Centre. The idea to renew the production came from George Quick, who moved to Chattanooga from San Francisco in July to lead the CTC as producing director. Mr. Quick was surprised to learn the Theatre did not mount an annual production of the holiday favorite. "After getting to know the Theatre a bit more and taking a look around Chattanooga, I realized this, our 85th season, is the perfect time to revive this classic," Mr. Quick explained. "With all the exciting holiday celebrations and arts events Downtown, on the NorthShore, at the Choo-Choo, and the Aquarium that make Chattanooga a winter destination, it occurred to me that it was time for the CTC to join in the fun." Mr. Quick added that the Theatre Centre has become a favorite spot for corporate and private holiday parties, noting that "A Christmas Carol is a familiar title with broad appeal for groups of all ages." In order to stage A Christmas Carol, the Theatre Centre re-visited the 2008/2009 MainStage season. One title, Dearly Beloved, was dropped from the lineup to make room for the family favorite. Mr. Quick made some additional changes to the calendar, rearranging production dates in order to order to open up the schedule. The Theatre will no longer open two shows on the same night, and no productions will run during Riverbend. "We realized that the community calendar is full, and our schedule could be more in synch with community events," said Mr. Quick. Circle shows will now be presented on Friday and Saturday only, a move that reflects the preference of the younger audiences who attend these edgier, more contemporary plays. The Circle Series now includes four shows, with Young Man From Atlanta being removed from the season that begins in January. "The changes on the Circle Stage enable us to focus on two Youth Theatre productions – Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing and Disney's Alice In Wonderland – for the rest of this calendar year," said Mr. Quick. One thing that will continue is the successful $10 Thursdays, where patrons can get a ticket in the side section for a MainStage production for only $10. Season tickets remain on sale through Dec. 19 for the entire MainStage season, which now includes High School Musical (Sept. 5 – Oct. 5), A Christmas Carol, Doubt, Ring Round the Moon, Company, Streetcar Named Desire, and Noises Off. Auditions for the large cast of Dickens' A Christmas Carol will be held Sunday and Monday, Oct. 5 and 6, at 7:30 in the Theatre Centre. More information will be available soon on the newly designed website: www.theatrecentre.com. |
