The Urban League of Greater Chattanooga announced that recruitment has begun for the 2008-2009 class of the National Achievers Society.
An honor society for African American and Hispanic youth in grades 9, 10, 11 and 12 who secure a 3.0 grade point average or better, the National Achievers Society has more than 16,000 members nationwide.
Student members participate in monthly information sessions on a variety of topics such as How to Get a Job, Manners and Etiquette, Acing the College Application, Applying for Scholarships, Managing your Money, Citizenship and Civic Engagement. ACT/SAT Prep is an additional core component of the program.
Most sessions are held on Saturday mornings. Trips to college fairs, museums, and community service projects throughout the city represent additional components of the program.
Members are also recommended for the Bi-Lo Urban League Scholarship and the National Urban League Scholarship and get the opportunity to participate in the Urban League’s Infinite Scholars Scholarship Fair.
The Chattanooga induction ceremony will take place in late September.
Interested students or their parents/guardians should call 756-1762 for application materials or speak to their guidance counselor.
The deadline for applications is Sept. 22.
The Urban League of Greater Chattanooga, Inc., an affiliate of the National Urban League, is a non-profit agency established in Chattanooga in 1981. The League works toward assisting African Americans, other minorities and the poor in the achievement of social and economic equality.
