Lee Volleyball Wins Conference Opener Over Shorter
posted September 5, 2008

The Lee Lady Flames improved to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the Southern States Athletic Conference by handing host Shorter College a 3-1 volleyball defeat on Friday evening.

Cheered on by a large crowd at the Winthrop-King Centre, the Lady Hawks surprised the Lady Flames by winning the first set 21-25. Lee regained its composure and went on to claim the final three sets 25-21, 25-22, 25-21. “It was a little crazy,” admitted coach Andrea Hudson. “They had a big crowd and the Shorter team was really hungry. I think some of our younger players were intimidated at first, but this should be good for them. They regained their composure and responded very well.”

Veteran senior Tina Questel led the Lee attack with 15 kills. Milica Krsmanovic, the SSAC Player of the Week, followed with 11 kills, three assists and four blocks. Freshman Stephanie Todd joined in with eight kills and eight digs, while a pair of newcomers, Gretchen Higdon and Kelsey Leffew set up their teammates in the assists department. Higdon finished with 20 assists and eight digs, while Leffew chipped in with 15 assists.

The Lady Flames will open their home season on Monday, hosting NCAA Division II power University of Alabama- Huntsville in a 7 p.m. start. On Wednesday at 7 p.m. Lee will be back in Walker Arena for their second SSAC test of the season when Faulkner University visits.
