Planners Seeking New Way To Connect Greenways Via C.B. Robinson Bridge posted September 6, 2008 Officials are seeking a new way to construct a Tennessee Riverwalk connection spanning the river at the C.B. Robinson Bridge. Gov. Phil Bredesen in 2006 had announced that the state would provide the city of Chattanooga a $737,585 enhancement grant to help build the connection. The plan was to suspend a trailway section from the bottom of the bridge, but Mayor Ron Littlefield said the Army Corps of Engineers later ruled that plan out. He said the Corps said sections of the hanging pathway would be too close to the channel or the river and might be struck by tall riverboats like the Delta Queen. Those grant funds were afterwards shifted to the Enterprise South Industrial Park, and they are now being shifted again, the mayor said. Mayor Littlefield said he still wants to see the greenway connection built and planners will seek a different method. He said it may involve a new lateral section of trail off one side of the bridge. The city has received a $140,000 state grant "for the planning, engineering and construction of an ADA accessible pedestrian and bicycle passage across the C.B. Robinson Bridge." The city is providing a matching $35,200. The trail would connect the Riverwalk on the south side by Amnicola Highway with the North Chickamauga Creek Greenway. |
