Covenant Volleyball Loses Twice At Union

A 3-0 Appalachian Athletic Conference sweep is how the Union College volleyball team started play on Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs were able to defeat Covenant College inside Robsion Arena, but the afternoon ended with Shawnee State (Ohio) University upending Union 3-0.

Union won the first two sets with similar scores of 25-21 before a 25-22 match clincher in the third set against Covenant. The Shawnee State contest saw the Lady Bulldogs fall 18-25, 14-25 and 22-25.

Shawnee State handed Covenant a 3-0 defeat during the afternoon as well. Shawnee State used scores of 25-23, 25-17 and 26-24 for the victory.

After the day, Union improved to 5-3 record with a 1-1 AAC record. Covenant moved to 3-4 and holds a 1-1 conference mark. Shawnee State is currently 10-0.

For the second straight match, Stephanie Pateman (Weyburn, Canada) recorded a season high in the kills category against Covenant. The senior had 11 in the contest. Monica Moreland had 32 assists, also a season best for the sophomore from Louisville, Ky. Christina Prindle (Florence, Ky.) led the team with 14 digs. Marlee Cooper (Bloomington, Ill.) and Autumn Combs (Florence, Ky.) recorded three total blocks apiece.

In the Shawnee State contest, Pateman and Cooper had five kills apiece. Moreland collected 16 assists while Prindle gathered eight digs.

Union returns to conference play on Tuesday when preseason favorite King College visits Barbourville for a 7 p.m. contest. Union was right behind King in the coaches' pre-season poll in second.
