Long Motion Says Overstreet Welched On Paying Appraiser
posted September 9, 2008

A motion filed in behalf of former Sheriff Billy Long says the government's cooperating witness against him, the Rev. Eugene Overstreet, welched on paying an appraiser he hired in 2003.

Danny Mabee said in an affidavit that he was hired by Rev. Overstreet to do an appraisal of his Family Mortuary at 4707 12th Ave.

He said he wound up doing two appraisals and the total bill was $11,000.

Mr. Mabee said he was given checks on the AmSouth Bank in Fort Oglethorpe, but he was advised the account had been closed.

He said he finally went to General Sessions Court to seek to get paid. He said he won a judgment in January 2007 and he was to get $230 a month. He said he has received "four or five" payments since then.

Attorney Jerry Summers said he expects to file no further affidavits alleging problems with witness Overstreet.

Long is awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to federal charges.
