posted September 20, 2008

Senior running backs John Brock and Joey Skogen each rushed for 100 yards as host McCallie defeated Father Ryan, 21-0, in a TSSAA Division II high school football game Friday at Spears Stadium.

Skogen scored twice in the first half on runs of 24 and 1 yards and Brock followed with two of his three PATs as McCallie (3-2, 1-1) led 14-0 at halftime.

Junior quarterback Keenon Rush closed out the scoring on a 23-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Brock led all rushers with 107 yards on 10 carries, followed by Scogen (102 yards on 12 carries) and Trell Gardenhire (27 yards on 2 carries). Ryan was led by Anthony Wilson with 52 yards on 11 carries.

McCallie outgained the Irish (2-2, 0-1) on the ground, 313-43, as it controlled the line of scrimmage and the time of possession (25:54 to 22:06, including by five minutes in the first half).

Ryan led in passing yards, 122 to 71.
"We had a good week of practice and it showed tonight,'' said McCallie head coach Rick Whitt. "Father Ryan ran some of the same offense as Charlotte (N.C.) Country Day did last week so that helped in our preparation.''
Red Zone: McCallie was inside the Ryan 20-yard-line four times in the first half and scored twice.

"We missed two good scoring opportunities and had two excellent chances to block punts and didn't,'' said Whitt. "Sometimes those missed oppontunities come back to haunt you.''

Dodging a Ryan Bullet: Trailing 7-0 late in the first half, Ryan recovered a McCallie fumble at the Blue Tornado 18 and drove to the 1, but couldn't score. On third and 1 from the 1, a bad center snap pushed Ryan back to its own 28 and field goal attempt by Mitchell Arnold was wide left from 45 yards. Ryan never reached the McCallie red zone again.

Ball Control: McCallie's three scoring drives were 85, 52 and 52 yards, averaging 7 plays a possession. McCallie led in time of possession 25:54 to 22:06.

Interceptions: McCallie had second half interceptions by Tyler Newman (third quarter) and Guerin Higgins (fourth quarter) to stop Ryan drives in Tornado territory.

100 Yard Game: First time this season for McCallie to have a pair of 100 yard rushers in the same game ... This was Skogen's third, 100-yard game of the season and Brock's first.

Closing in on 1,000: John Brock has 996 yards rushing the last two seasons.
