Dr. Russell Barkley, International ADHD Expert, Speaks Here Thursday posted September 28, 2008 Dr. Russell Barkley, international ADHD expert, will speak at a conference sponsored by he Greater Chattanooga Area of CHADD (Children and Adults with ADHD). Dr. Barkley’s topic will be “ADHD in Children and Adults: Advances in Understanding and Management.” The conference will bring the latest medical research to parents and adults whose lives are adversely affected by ADHD, officials said. The conference will be Thursday with registration from 4-5 p.m., dinner from 4:30-5:45 p.m., and Dr. Barkley’s presentation from 6-9 p.m. It will be held at the East Brainerd Church of Christ, 7745 East Brainerd Road. Key sponsors of the event are Chattanooga State, McKee Baking, WTVC, Community Foundation, First Tennessee Bank, Independent Healthcare Properties, The Honors Learning Center, and Pamper Garner & Associates. Dr. Barkley is a nationally and internationally-known medical researcher and expert on ADHD and related learning disabilities, having presented more than 600 invited presentations to various public and professional groups throughout North America and in over 16 additional countries. Dr. Barkley has appeared on many national television programs to discuss topics pertaining to ADHD, including: Today, Good Morning America, 60 Minutes, The Early Show with Bryant Gumbel, Frontline, Investigative Reports, and on a variety of regional radio and television programs throughout North America and Australia. He has assisted the following major magazines and newspapers, among others, with stories on ADHD: Newsweek, Time, Scientific American, Newsday, Readers Digest, The New Yorker, Parents Magazine, Woman’s Day, Cosmopolitan, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Washington Post, Washington Times, and Sydney Morning Herald. Dr. Barkley holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Bowling Green State University and since July 2005 has been a Research Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, SUNY Upstate Medical University, Syracuse, NY and Clinical Professor of Psychology, Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, SC. CHADD (Children and Adults with Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder) of the Greater Chattanooga Area is a non-profit organization, governed by community volunteers. Activities include: holding monthly support meetings, complete with speakers to educate others about ADHD; offering Parent-to-Parent training for parents who need in-depth help with parenting skills; providing a 24-hour support phone line for those who need help with ADHD situations; providing scholarship support to families in need of parental skills training; maintaining relationships with mental health professionals in order to make referrals to those in need; hosting educational conferences for medical professionals and the public. The local chapter of CHADD is part of the CHADD National Organization (www.chadd.org). The CHADD mission statement is as follows: "CHADD improves the lives of people affected by AD/HD.” Teachers and psychologists will receive continuing education credits for attendance at this event.
