Walker Valley Wins Region 3-AAA Boys Golf Title
Cumberland's Cody King Medalist; Playoff Tuesday For 2 Berths
by special report to The Chattanoogan
posted September 29, 2008

CROSSVILLE, Tenn. – Once again, Walker County’s boys were consistent for head coach Bob Williams.

The Mustangs finished at 309 Monday and walked away with the Region 3-AAA boys golf championship at the Bear Trace Cumberland Mountain Course.

The Mustangs got a 76 from Hunter Vest, a 77 from Caleb Evans, and 78s from Steven Locke and Corey Evans. Tylor Adams added an 80 that wasn’t included in the winning score.

Cleveland finished second at 312, led by Tanner Garland’s 76. Garland qualified for the state tournament.

Cumberland County’s Cody King, a senior, was the medalist with an even-par 72, and also qualified for state.

“We had been waiting for this round,’’ said Cumberland County coach and tournament director Randy Herring. “He stepped up and made the most of this opportunity.

“The course was a championship venue. It was a great test of golf.’’

Three golfers tied for third at 77 – Cleveland’s Tyler Goza, Soddy-Daisy’s Zach Hester and McMinn County’s Ryne Thompson – and will have a playoff on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. eastern at the Chattata Valley Course in Cleveland for the two remaining state-tournament berths.

“We simply couldn’t have a playoff,’’ Herring said. “We were doing the final scores by the light of a flashlight.’’

Herring said there was some controversy and some disgruntled parents.

“One group took three hours to play the front and we told them they had to pick it up,’’ Herring said. “They did have some ruling situations, so it was a difficult situation, but they were a hole and half behind the group in front of them.’’
